Loudon(Mouth)- Mouth is a nice kid that talks a lot. He is brave because he asked outalmost every girl in school and got turned down by them all. Scott thought hehad no guilt, but really he was just trying to make friends. Since Mouth talkedso much people tried to avoid him, also because he talked about topics no onereally understood or liked. Stress and rejection cause Mouth to try and killhimself but that didn't go so well but he did survive and was transferred to adifferent school.

The story is written in the first person from a very limited perspective except for one distinct scene. Chapter twenty-six begins with the sentence, 'Scott Hudson settled back in his seat.' The first page of that chapter continues in the third person from an obviously omniscient perspective. The author notes that one of the other students is hungry, a fact that Scott wouldn't know and that indicates the omniscient perspective. Then it's explained that Mr. Franka is explaining about third person omniscient perspectives, prompting Scott himself to write in that style. That section is immediately followed by a very brief second-person scene before returning to the first person limited perspective seen throughout the book.
